You'll start with facing an enemy long thought eradicated from the galaxy: the Rachni. Shepard takes Legion to a major heretic station, and then either destroys the heretic station, "deleting" massive numbers of individual geth minds, or uploads a program that simulates thousands of Geth minds, all suggesting that the Geth do not cooperate with the Reapers, as the Geth operate through a hive mind. Legion calls these "heretics" and indicates that these machines do not convey the wishes of the geth race.
It describes itself as being the collective conciousness of thousands of Geth, which prompts EDI to name it "Legion".ĭiscussions with Legion show that the Reapers had made contact with the Geth, causing some to join the Reapers fight.
After activating it, it acknowledges who Shepard is, and shows no signs of hostility. In the events of Mass Effect 2, Commander Shepard finds a single Geth, whom Shepard takes back to the Normandy after witnessing it speak. This attempt failed and triggered a war between the Geth and the Quarians where the Geth won over their creators - this was referred to as the Morning War where the surviving Quarians had to evacuate their homeworld onto a massive fleet which is known as the Migrant Fleet. When they started questioning themselves and reasoning with the Quarians, this alarmed the creators and they attempted to shut them down before they could conceive a revolt. Geth programs were indeed non-sentient individually, but slowly gained sentience through the massive geth network. Unfortunately, this feature was the quarians' undoing. They were also designed to operate more efficiently when networked together. They were designed as VIs (Virtual Intelligence), as advanced as possible while remaining non-sentient. The geth were created by the Quarians as a labor force. Many of the perceptions some Races used to have may have changed thanks to the efforts of Commander Shepard in the prequels. Since Commander Shepard is inevitably Human, the approach of the other Races towards Humanity is most of the time visible for the player. Races in Mass Effect 3 have their own agendas, culture, religion, ways to govern etc.
They are a race of networked AI's that reside beyond the Perseus Veil. Geth was originally created by the Quarians as laborers and tools of war.
